During the past few years, Thom Vink has worked on a consistent body of work. His approach can best be described as a series of attempts to understand the city and its architecture as an organic process. Where urbanists, property developers and politicians who believe that social change can be effected through public policies would like us to believe that a city develops on the basis of rational considerations, consensus, specific expertise and according to pre-established plans, this artist whispers poetic and occasionally unsettling footnotes. Stroom Den Haag presents the first retrospective of this artist in the Netherlands.

In his work Thom Vink works with fascinating and remarkable analogies to methods from psychotherapy, forms of abstract art, biological structures, physical perceptual phenomena and literary and non-literary narratives. He draws a great deal of inspiration from the pre-Google era. The encyclopaedias from that age, with compact information about indisputable truths, illustrated by mysterious images and fascinating graphs, form a rich source. By carefully selecting and rearranging these images he changes their aesthetics and gives them new meaning.

Thom Vink (1965, Leiden, NL) graduated from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 1990. A major part of the year he spends abroad, primarily in Finland and Japan. Solo exhibitions include 'Evidence' in gallery Muu in Helsinki, Finland (2004); 'Home' in gallery 300m3 in Gothenburg, Sweden (2004); 'Complex' in Aaltonen Museum in Turku, Finland (2005); and 'Changers' in Youkobo Art Space in Tokyo, Japan (2009).

His exhibition 'Moth House' at Stroom Den Haag is the latest installment in Stroom's series of solo presentations by artists like Mark Handforth (2005), Calin Dan (2006) and Toby Paterson (2007). The power and originality of their work is of great value for everyone interested in the urban environment.

BH139 and Streaming festival

Op 20 november gaat de vierde editie van het Streaming Festival van start. In dit kader wordt in BH139 van 20 tot en met 27 november de fototentoonstelling Streaming Stills georganiseerd. Naast een expo zoals je kunt verwachten van een fototentoonstelling, worden er ook foto´s vertoond die op dat moment via het online Streaming Festival worden geüpload door een onbekende fotograaf ergens op de wereld. Aan Streaming Stills doen mee Albert ’t Hooft, Damir Segon, Douwe Anne Verbrugge, Emilie Malcorps, Femke Sleegers, Jeffrey Grouwstra, Rob van Dam, Slaven Kosanovic en Zoran Lesic.

Over het Streaming Festival

Het Streaming Festival is een online filmfestival dat van 20 tot 30 november plaatsvindt op www.streamingfestival.com. Het festival wordt georganiseerd vanuit Den Haag maar verder kent het festival geen grenzen. Bezoekers kunnen overal ter wereld op elk tijdstip van de dag full screen films bekijken met hoge beeldkwaliteit zonder een toegangskaartje te kopen.
Het Streaming Festival wordt georganiseerd door Stichting ISFTH, een organisatie die de toegankelijkheid van videokunst wil vergroten.

'One moment, it's really beautiful'... 'Can you stand still?' klinkt het dringend, doch vriendelijke verzoek van Paulien Oltheten. Tijdens haar verblijf in Japan concentreert Paulien zich tijdens het maken van korte documenten niet op grote gebeurtenissen maar op kleine details. Een kleine beweging, houding of conversatie tussen mensen zorgen voor een onverwacht theatraal aspect in haar fascinatie voor het documenteren van menselijk gedrag.
In '11 fragments of Japan' wordt Paulien een expliciet onderdeel van haar eigen werk. In plaats van alleen te bevinden en observeren achter de camera, werd zij duidelijk de actieve sturende factor in haar scenes. Mensen worden aangesproken op hun normale gedragingen, waarna Paulien het normale net iets bijstuurt tot iets specifiek. Het zijn kleine aanpassingen in hoe wij bewegen, zitten en hoe wij ons tot andere mensen en objecten verhouden.
In haar foto's zien we die momenten terug, het moment waarop het normale net iets aangepast of benadrukt is. In '11 fragments of Japan' wordt de zoektocht naar dergelijke momenten zelf het onderwerp. Het is de 'making off' van de productie van dat ene moment waarop normaal en bevreemdend elkaar ontmoeten.
Dit past mooi in Notes on Narratives, een tentoonstelling waarin kunstenaars getoond worden die in een enkele scene of beeld een verstrekkend verhaal vertellen.

What is HOOGTIJ?
HOOGTIJ (High tide) is the cultural route through artists’ initiatives, galleries and art institutions in the centre of The Hague and takes place four times a year on a Friday evening.

The presentations at a HOOGTIJ evening range from white cube to underground art. You’ll find more established art in the galleries and institutions and more experimental art, installations and performances in the artists' initiatives. At HOOGTIJ, these two extremes come together. And that is precisely the power of HOOGTIJ!
At HOOGTIJ # 19 there are seventeen locations joining.
All locations are open from 7 through 11 pm.

Van 31 oktober tot en met 8 november vult Liefhertje en De Grote Witte Reus het voormalig Jencikova pand aan de Lange Poten in Den Haag met heel veel fashion van exceptionele kwaliteit. Onder de naam Le Démarrage is deze tijdelijke Gallery Store het kloppend hart en het vertrekpunt van Résidence de la Mode, dé kakelverse fashionroute door de Haagse binnenstad die wordt georganiseerd rondom de uitreiking van de Mercedes Benz Dutch Fashion Awards. Het pand wordt omgetoverd tot de meest exclusieve dozenschuiver van Nederland. Grafisch ontwerper Karin Mientjes laat zich namelijk helemaal gaan en zal zorg dragen voor een fantastisch ingerichte ruimte.

Naast Liefhertje en De Grote Witte Reus' finest, is er werk van genomineerde ontwerpers te vinden en is er werk te zien en te bestellen van jonge ontwerpers die aan de route deelnemen.

Speciaal voor deze gelegenheid zullen fotografen Nadine Stijns en Krista van der Niet werk tentoonstellen. Ook zijn er gedurende de week diverse activiteiten.

At first glance the fountains, arcades and stones by Vincent Ganivet remind us of declining Old Rome. The young French artist Vincent Ganivet triggers his audience by using traditional building structures in a new context and by reconstructing classic ways of building.

Vincent Ganivet (1976, FR) shows for the second time at West with his surrealistic objects which are obvious and touching at the same time. He is an ethical artist for whom autonomy and control of his resources are essential. With raw material such as stones, concrete and glass he assembles powerful constructions that carry a delicate message and create tension among the viewers.
A wooden box filled with fire-works including an activated lighting mechanism and a carefully set up (leaking) water system on the ceiling. Also, the fragile installation of dishes, with glasses and other kitchen utensils which can crash any moment, is quite nerveracking.
In everyday life we would try to avoid these dangerous situations. But Ganivet drags the audience into his work and despite of – or because of - the disorder that it evokes, it provokes a laugh.

For this exhibition at West Ganivet creates objects of solid ceramic construction material in a production method like on ‘the assembly line’. Next to Ganivets Arcades his Stones seem to be natural readymades. Nevertheless, appearances are deceiving. The artificial rock is not resting on the ground statically, as one might expect, but vibrates from time to time just like a mobile phone. And again Ganivet plays with water and keeps the visitor at a distance.

Beside exhibitions in France, Ganivet has had shows at, amongst others, J. Marroquí y D. Arlandis, Valencia, at M.B.Prospects, Berlin and at West, The Hague (june 2008). At this very moment he shows his work together with the remarkable architects Lang & Baumann at Le Confort Moderne, Poitiers.

Zondag 27 september, is er een nieuwe aflevering van Los van Woorden met Greta Monach, Mariska Baars en Huur is Duur.
In willekeurige volgorde zullen optreden:

Greta Monach, de grande dame van de Nederlandse klank poëzie zal het klankgedicht Fónergon 96-1 ten gehore brengen.
Een reeks lettertekeningen - Automáterga 2009 of Lapjes - hangt aan de muur.
Deze zijn gemaakt met behulp van computer en tekenmachine.

Mariska Baars AKA Soccer Committee, zegt zelf:
"Ik wil dat alles elkaar raakt en mijn lichaam bepaalt of dat zo is. Ik stel me compleet open als ik speel. Het voelt als een samenwerking van mijn oren, de rest van mijn lichaam en de ruimte.”
Verstilde gitaar (boven)tonen spelen een intens spel met haar wonderschone stem.

Huur is Duur bestaat uit Wietske van Gils (ZimZimZim) en Christophe Piette (R.O.T.) zij komen over uit Belgie om met behulp van een goed gevulde tafel vol met akoestische niet-instrumenten tot een non-verbaal gesprek te komen, diep, integer, onpretensieus maar overweldigend.
