Diederik Gerlach (1956) gebruikt in zijn nieuwste schilderijen foto’s van filmsterren uit de jaren dertig, of ouderwetse vakantie-oorden. In zijn karakteristieke palet van gemengde en gedempte kleuren worden ze naast en boven elkaar gezet, alsof je op een tafel kijkt waarop verschillende foto’s zijn uitgestald. Zo ontstaat een dubbelzinnige, compliceerde ruimte in het schilderij, waarin de toeschouwer de onderlinge voorstellingen met elkaar moet verbinden.
Gerlach zet de foto’s van vrouwelijke filmsterren naar zijn eigen hand, door de vaak theatrale achtergrond van de fotostudio te vervangen door bijvoorbeeld een eigenaardig alpenlandschap. Naast en gedeeltelijk op deze hoofdvoorstelling legt hij afbeeldingen van interieurs of landschappen, die de kunstenaar uit zijn eigen herinnering opdiept. Bestaand beeldmateriaal wordt dus aangepast en gecombineerd met voorstellingen uit de eigen herinnering. Zo ontstaat een nieuw beeld waarin nostalgie plaats maakt voor een nieuwe, ongerijmde en soms wat ongemakkelijke werkelijkheid, waarin de toeschouwer zijn weg moet zoeken.
Naast deze grotere schilderijen is er een serie kleine paneeltjes van ouderwetse vakantie oorden in Tirol, waar steeds links of rechts een textielpatroon in het beeld is geschilderd.
Deze abstracte coulissestukken geven de afbeelding van een tennisbaan of openlucht zwembad extra scherpte en tillen ze boven het anekdotische uit.
Bij de expositie verschijnt in de reeks Haags Palet een publicatie over Diederik Gerlach’s werk met teksten van Egbert van Faassen en Philip Peters.

Opening: zondag 14 september om 12.30 uur door Gerrit Jan de Rook, Denneweg 14a / vanaf 14.30 uur is de tentoonstelling in 7X11 geopend.
Een praktisch onderzoek naar de uitbreiding van het visuele genoegen. Zo zou je deze tentoonstelling kunnen omschrijven. Het thema 'huis' en de vertrekken die dat huis vormen, evenals het daarin aanwezige meubilair, waren voor curator Marten Hendriks aanleiding om op zoek te gaan naar kunstenaars die hierdoor gefascineerd zijn.

De tuin van de muur
Installatie
Mark van Overeem is geboeid door muren, maar dan wel muren in metafysische zin. 'Mensenmuren' noemt hij ze, mentale begrenzingen. Binnen deze mentale begrenzing ontstaat als het ware een tuin, 'de tuin van de muur'.
De installatie is een work in progress, veranderingen zijn te volgen op de site.

Topstukken en nieuwe aanwinsten
'De collectie van Heden is van voortreffelijke kwaliteit' zo omschreef de adviescommissie kunst en cultuur van Den Haag onlangs nog de collectie van Heden.
In deze rubriek willen wij iedere maand één van onze kunstwerken uitlichten. Deze keer is dat een recente aanwinst van de Haagse kunstenaar José den Hartog. Tijdens een werkperiode in 2005 in het Europees Keramisch Werkcentrum in Den Bosch maakte Den Hartog een serie keramische beelden gebaseerd op 'ex voto's'. 'Ex voto's' zijn voorwerpen die geplaatst worden bij een altaar of heiligenbeeld als dank aan God of een heilige voor een verkregen gunst.

Naast een selectie van fotografen van het eindexamen 2008 van de Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten zullen Marsel Loermans en Anton Spruit een bijzondere versie van hun project Sexagesima projecteren.

Mijn kunstproject 'de mobiele volkstuin' speelt met de begrenzingen van openbare ruimte. Mijn mobiele tuin kan tijdelijk een plek innemen die geen groenbestemming heeft; een trottoir, plein, stoep, snelweg. En zo, de openbare ruimte tijdelijk van bestemming wijzigen, en minder statisch maken. Tijdelijk, maar met het doel het belang van meer permanente volkstuinen in Den Haag of andere steden zichtbaar te maken.

The number of victims of extreme weather and terrorrist attacks is growing at an alarming pace. Everyday we see images of refugees trying to escape the violence of war or the helpless victims of floods and earthquakes. Aid organizations must act fast to help these people, to supply them with food and water, to direct them to a safe place. Giving people in disaster areas good and accurate information can save many lives and reduce damages and the amount of panic. Pictograms can be of help. With 'After Neurath: A Safe Place - International System of Disaster Pictograms' Stroom Den Haag presents the first attempt at an international system of disaster pictograms.
In 2007 graphic designers Derk Dumbar and Gert Dumbar presented the pilot version of their series of disaster pictograms 'A Safe Place' within the framework of Utrecht Manifest. The pictograms are especially designed as a tool for communication between aid workers and victims of disasters. They form the start of the development of a universal picture language to be used worldwide during natural disasters, epidemics, human failure, armed conflicts, terrorism or combinations thereof. It is a search for visual answers to universal problems.
The exhibition of Derk Dumbar and his team at Stroom Den Haag focuses on the recently developed disaster pictograms, the sources and the research that is supposed to lead to a standardized system. 'A Safe Place' is an ideological enterprise showing the belief in images as a basis for a universal communication transcending cultural differences. As such the project builds on Otto Neurath's body of thought. 'A Safe Place' concludes the event 'After Neurath'.
The 'After Neurath' project is inspired by the life and work of the Austrian science philosopher, political economist and sociologist Otto Neurath (1882-1945), who lived in The Hague from 1934 till 1940. Collaborating with Gerd Arntz and Marie Reidemeister, Neurath developed a system which in the course of the thirties became known as ISOTYPE, a system of picture diagrams that converted data concerning social developments into appealing icons. 'After Neurath' includes lectures, workshops, exhibitions and other activities Stroom has been organizing off and on during the period 2006-2008.

´Wish you were here´ is an exhibition of panoramic photographs of Marsel Loermans. Loermans was born in 1956 in Wijchen.
The photographs are taken on his long trips around the world. The title of the exhibition refers to the classic postcard text, but the images let you see something very different.

The Hague Sculpture
The exhibition The Hague Sculpture started already two weeks ago, but you can see the whole summer the sculptures at the Lange Voorhout in The Hague. This year the theme is artists from the USA.
Some of them are:
Carl Andre, Paul McCarthy, Sam Durant, Jenny Holzer, Sol LeWitt, Julian Schnabel, Kiki Smith, Bill Viola, Kara Walker.
Here I photograph of Bernanrd Rosenthal's work yesterday at the War Veterans Parade.
There are very good works to be seen, go and find out if you agree or not.

Verhalende kunst van Dorothea Hassink
Het werk van Dorothea bestaat voornamelijk uit wandobjecten en miniatuurschilderijen. Haar wandobjecten zijn frivool. Gebruikmakend van uitbundige, sterke kleuren gecombineerd met glitter, plastic en keramiek. Bezaaid met kraaltjes en siersteentjes zoeken de objecten de grenzen van de smaak. Het is meer dan kitsch. De mierzoete verpakking zorgt voor vrolijkheid, maar ook voor bedrieglijke gevoelens. Er is geen sprake van alleen maar een luchtige verpakking: de werken vertellen een verhaal.
“Ik hoef mij als beeldend kunstenaar niet aan de regels te houden”
In haar miniatuurschilderijtjes met een gouden engeltje of een zilveren glitterboeddha lijkt de schoonheid van een hogere macht te worden gevierd. Het verhaal van de werken kan voor een ieder verschillen, maar inhoudsloos, dat zijn ze zeker niet. De glitters en kraaltjes trekken de toeschouwer als het ware het doek in. Dan worden 'details' als munten, keramische miniatuurkatjes of kleine boeddha's goed zichtbaar. Het resultaat is dat objecten vatbaar zijn voor een nieuwe uitleg of een ander inzicht. De objecten 'de koekoeksklokken met inhoud' lijken chaotisch, maar zijn juist zeer geordend. Alles staat in een goede verhouding tot elkaar, er is duidelijk sprake van een evenwichtige verdeling van de gebruikte materialen.
Dorothea Christiane Hassink, (1965 - Lochem) is actief als beeldend kunstenaar sinds 1991. In dat jaar rondde zij haar studie af aan de kunstacademie AKI in Enschede. Sindsdien heeft ze geëxposeerd in verschillende galerieën, kunstcentra en musea. Haar visie op het kunstenaar-zijn is een visie van bestaansrecht; te laten zien dat je bestaat. Het niet gebonden zijn aan regels maar alle mogelijkheden hebben van de wereld. Kunst is Leven en Leven is Kunst.

Depicting criminals
Sculpture exhibition in the silon

This exhibition is about identity. We often want to simplify identity so that it is only defined by outer appearance, clothes and style. Yet how can we judge another person based solely on appearance? By looking at the nose?
This exhibition is especially about criminal identity, how images live their own lives and influence our reactions. Behind criminal acts there may be complex pattern of cause and consequence, personal histories and psychological explanations.
The picture is never clear. History offers us a rich and complex material: Pablo Escobar in his self-declared role as a Robin Hood, financing projects for the poor in Colombia with money he earned with drugs and extortion and the almost mythical Al - Scarface - Capone in an explosive mix of alcohol, killings and Mafia romantics. A third type could be someone who just looked like a criminal, but was just a poor guy in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The exhibition "Depicting criminals" questions our perception of criminals, and our own sometimes simplistic judgements about people. Life would be simple if you could just take a look at someone's nose to know...!
CV
Gert Germeraad, Utrecht, The Netherlands - 1959, lives and works in Eljaröd south of Brösarp, Sweden. Educated at the Academy of fine Art, Rotterdam. He has had many exhibitions in Sweden and the Netherlands in galleries and museums. For example at Sölvesborg Konsthall, Adelsnäs Orangeri in Åtvidaberg, Galerie de Zaal, Delft and the Dutch Ambassy in Yakarta, Indonesia. He has had several public and private commissions as portraits and public sculpture. He also had grants from the Dutch Fonds BKVB (The
Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture) and Stroom Den Haag. He is represented in public and private collections in The Netherlands, Germany, Denmark and Sweden. Upcoming exhibitions: Norrköping Konstforum, 2008, Sculpture park De Heemtuin, Leiderdorp, The Netherlands, 2008.
